Join the directory of progressives on Twitter

I can mentor people new to Twitter

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the goal?
A: There are two primary goals: connect progressives with each other, and encourage more progressives to join Twitter. Being able to go to one place to find and connect with progressives all over the country is a vital piece of infrastructure for the movement.
Q: What happens when I click "Join and Tweet"?
A: You will be added to the directory and you'll tweet whatever is in the tweet box, which defaults to "just joined http://tweetprogress.us/ a directory of progressives on twitter #p2", but you can change it. You'll also start following @tweetprogress, and @tweetprogress will follow you. This is so we can communicate.
Q: How do I remove myself from the directory?
A: Sign in with your Twitter account at the top of the page, click on "update" and uncheck the "in the directory" box.
Q: How is "influential" and "highly influential" determined?
A: We use Topsy.com to determine influence, it goes beyond just the total # of followers a person has. Topsy explains how it works here.
Q: How do I update my bio/location/picture/follower count?
A: The info also comes from your Twitter settings. You can change it here. Then each time you login to Tweet Progress it will update all of your information from Twitter. So if you're logged in to Tweet Progress, just log out and log back in to update your info.
Q: Can you show whether I am following someone already?
A: Not yet. But if you click on "follow" and you're already following them, nothing bad will happen. So when in doubt, just click "follow."
Q: I followed someone, but it isn't showing up on Twitter. Why?
A: Twitter has various limits on how much you can do within an hour or a day. You probably ran into those limits. Tweet Progress will keep trying to send your follow request through, but it could take an hour or even a day, depending on whether you use a Twitter client like TweetDeck, or have tried to follow a large number of people. Twitter has more details.
Q: Are you going to add me to a spam email list?
A: No, it's not even possible with Twitter because we never know your email address.
I can't sign in.
A: Twitter goes down a lot, and sometimes there is just plain weirdness. If you are having a problem, try shutting down your browser and/or deleting your tweetprogress.us cookies (You can do this in most browsers by going into Preferences > Cookies). Then restart your browser. If it's still a problem, send a tweet to @jgilliam and I can add you to the directory.
Q: Who funds this?
A: It's an all volunteer effort. The web hosting is paid by one of the volunteers, @jgilliam.
